What Is the Shahadah?
The Shahadah is the declaration of faith and the first pillar of Islam. By sincerely believing and saying these words, a person enters the religion of Islam.
What Does the Shahadah Mean?
Arabic:
Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah.
Meaning:
"I bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."
The Shahadah is more than simply saying words—it is a sincere belief in the heart and a commitment to worship Allah alone and follow the guidance brought by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
How Do I Become a Muslim?
A person becomes a Muslim by sincerely believing in the message of Islam and saying the Shahadah with conviction.
There is no complicated ceremony, membership, or special ritual required. Islam is based upon sincere belief in Allah and acceptance of His final Messenger.
Do I Need Witnesses?
No.
A person who sincerely accepts Islam between themselves and Allah is a Muslim, even if no one else is present.
However, saying the Shahadah in the presence of Muslims or at a local mosque is often recommended because it allows others to welcome and support you as you begin your journey.
Can I Say the Shahadah Alone?
Yes.
If you believe Islam is the truth, you do not need to wait.
You may say the Shahadah wherever you are. Allah hears every sincere declaration of faith.
Afterwards, we encourage you to contact your local mosque or a trusted Muslim organisation so that they can help you learn about your new faith.
What Happens After I Say the Shahadah?
Accepting Islam is the beginning of a beautiful new chapter in your life.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
"Islam wipes away what came before it." (Sahih Muslim)
This means that when a person sincerely accepts Islam, Allah forgives all of their previous sins.
From that moment, your journey as a Muslim begins. You will gradually learn how to pray, read the Qur'an, and grow in faith.
